Why Lagos Streets Are Still Buried in Refuse Despite Waste Collection Efforts

Refuse heaps have persisted for months across several Lagos communities, including Ejigbo, Idimu, Oshodi, Agege, Ikotun, Surulere and Igando. Residents say the smell, flies and blocked drainage channels are affecting daily life and hurting nearby businesses. The problem is linked to severe bottlenecks at the Olusosun dumpsite, where waste trucks reportedly spend hours or days waiting to discharge their loads. Poor access roads, flooding, stuck vehicles and inadequate heavy-duty equipment have reduced the number of collection trips operators can make. Some Private Sector Participation operators also allege that unofficial payments allow certain trucks to bypass queues. Alternative disposal sites in Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry and Ogun State have offered limited relief because of distance, restricted hours and poor road conditions.
