WASPEN Urges Nigerian Hospitals to Make Nutrition Screening Routine for Patients
The West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition has urged Nigerian hospitals to strengthen nutrition screening, assessment and treatment for patients at risk of malnutrition. The group says patients may arrive malnourished or become nutritionally depleted during illness, surgery, infection, cancer, trauma or critical care. Ahead of the 2026 Malnutrition Awareness Week, WASPEN said nutrition care should involve doctors, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, laboratory professionals, hospital leaders and other health workers. It called for multidisciplinary teams, better staff training, specialised nutrition products and systems to monitor patient outcomes. The campaign, themed “Nutrition is a Team Effort,” will include webinars, hospital sensitisation programmes and nutritional assessments in participating facilities. WASPEN said nutrition support should continue from communities to hospitals and after patients are discharged.
