Elderly Man Jailed 10 Years for Luring and Defiling 11-Year-Old Girl in Port Harcourt

A Rivers State Family Court in Port Harcourt has sentenced a 75-year-old man to ten years behind bars without the option of a fine for defiling an 11-year-old girl. The judge found that he lured her with N200 gifts on her way to school before repeatedly abusing her in his apartment. Justice Rita Oguguo ruled that the prosecution proved the charge beyond reasonable doubt with oral testimony, a confessional statement, and other evidence. She noted that while the offence normally attracts life imprisonment, the convict’s motherless children were considered in reducing the term. The court also ordered the man’s name entered into the state’s register of rapists. He must pay N1 million in compensation and is barred, along with his family, from approaching the victim’s household. The Rivers State Ministry of Justice welcomed the verdict, saying it would deter potential offenders.
