Celebrated Author Lola Shoneyin Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature
Acclaimed Nigerian author Lola Shoneyin has been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature at its annual summer gathering in London. Founded in 1820, the RSL reserves this honour for writers whose work has made lasting contributions to global literature. As part of the induction, Shoneyin signed the Society’s historic Roll Book with a dip pen once owned by George Eliot. Shoneyin rose to international acclaim with her debut novel, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, which was longlisted for the Orange Prize in 2011 and won the PEN Oakland Josephine Miles and Ken Saro-Wiwa Prose awards. She also directs the Book Buzz Foundation, founded the Aké Arts and Book Festival, and leads the Lagos-based Ouida Books. Her election highlights the Royal Society’s growing recognition of international voices that shape the world’s literary landscape and inspire future storytellers.
