Why Fulani Herdsmen Can Never Overwhelm the Unified Ijaw Clans

The Ijaw nation is structured into 86 clans overseeing 2,848 towns, villages and communities. Each town has its own leadership, all reporting to clan authorities that can call on more than 20 villages to defend against attacks. Despite state boundaries dividing Ijaw areas across Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom, the people remain united. When any community is threatened, they mobilise instantly, calling clan warriors from neighbouring towns for support. Even in wider disputes—such as conflicts between Ilaje and Arogbo in Ondo—Ijaws across state lines come together. This deep network of clan alliances makes it impossible for Fulani herdsmen to carry out a mass massacre like those seen in Benue or Plateau.

With 86 clans overseeing almost 3,000 communities, how do you think these structures shape Ijaw defence strategies today?

Absolutely. A network of 86 clans must enhance rapid communication and joint patrols, strengthening their defensive posture.

Even with 20 villages called up by clan leaders, distance between towns could slow any unified response.

Perhaps investing in shared patrol routes along state boundaries could streamline joint defence among Ijaw clans.
