Gumi Defends Kano’s ₦1.5bn Mass Wedding Fund Under Sharia

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has defended Kano State’s use of public funds for mass weddings, arguing that the scheme is a legitimate social welfare responsibility in a Shariah-governed society. Reacting to Kano’s recent wedding programme for 1,500 couples, Gumi said helping vulnerable people marry should not be seen only as funding private ceremonies. He argued that it could reduce social problems in communities where sex outside marriage is prohibited. The Kano State Government allocated about ₦1.5 billion to the initiative, known as Auren Gata. Beneficiaries, including widows, divorcees and low-income young people, received support such as household items, food, dowry assistance and empowerment funds. Participation was voluntary and included medical screening and consent requirements.
