Louisiana Man Functionally Cured of Sickle Cell Disease Through Gene Therapy

A 23-year-old man in Louisiana has become the first patient in the state to be functionally cured of sickle cell disease after receiving gene therapy. The treatment has brought him closer to achieving his dream of becoming a pilot. The therapy modifies stem cells so they produce red blood cells that do not sickle under stress. Before the infusion, he underwent stem-cell collection, transfusions and intensive chemotherapy to remove the cells causing the condition.
