Elumelu Urges Journalists to Combat Disinformation and Safeguard 2027 Elections

Former House Minority Leader Ndudi Godwin Elumelu warned that fake news and propaganda could undermine Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 polls. He delivered this keynote at the NUJ FCT Council Press Week Lecture. Elumelu described disinformation as a major threat that distorts public opinion, erodes trust and risks violent divisions. He urged media houses to prioritise accuracy over speed and to strengthen fact-checking to outpace purveyors of falsehood. He also called on politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns and present their track records, rather than resorting to negative propaganda. NUJ FCT Chair Grace Ike added that journalists must remain vigilant, verify facts and uphold ethical standards to protect the public interest.
