The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed a 12-year prison term for Dauda Sani Haladu over the rape of his 15-year-old domestic worker in Abuja. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons described the judgment as a landmark victory in the fight against sexual and gender-based violence. Haladu was first convicted in 2021 by an FCT High Court under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act. The assault took place in March 2017 when his family was away. He threatened the victim’s life to keep her silent. She later confided in a school official, leading to NAPTIP’s intervention and his arraignment in November 2017.
