Concerns Grow Over Boko Haram and ISWAP Influence in Borno and Yobe LGAs

Security concerns persist in parts of Borno and Yobe, following reports that some communities remain difficult for civil authorities to access. The Shehu of Borno and Governor Babagana Zulum previously raised alarms over areas including Abadam, Marte and Guzamala. Guzamala has remained a major concern, with reports that normal civil administration has not fully returned since 2018. Boko Haram and ISWAP are also reported to impose levies on some farmers and fishermen around Lake Chad and operate in rural border communities. The claim that as many as 20 LGAs have been ceded to insurgents requires independent verification. However, the reports underline the need for stronger security action and transparent electoral arrangements in conflict-affected areas ahead of 2027.
