ITF School Trains Teachers to Identify and Support Learning Disabilities

The wife of the Industrial Training Fund Director-General, Modupe Afiz Ogun, has called for stronger awareness and early intervention for children with learning disabilities. She said many affected learners are wrongly labelled lazy, rude or poorly raised because their challenges are not physically visible. She spoke at a three-day professional development training for teachers at the ITF Model School in Jos. The programme focused on helping teachers identify learning difficulties and use practical support strategies in the classroom. The training covered screening tools, neurodiverse classrooms, multi-sensory teaching, targeted interventions and Individualised Education Plans. Speakers stressed that conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia can affect educational outcomes when they are not identified early. Participants were urged to apply the lessons in their classrooms and to support learners beyond primary and secondary school, including in tertiary institutions and workplaces.
