Xenophobia Row Erupts Over Culture Minister’s Bid Block on Nigerian Pastor’s Good Hope Centre Offer
Nigerian pastor John Anosike says his bid for Cape Town’s Good Hope Centre is lawful, transparent and fully documented. The City of Cape Town has not yet confirmed the sale, and an audit is underway. During a Facebook Live, SA Minister of Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie vowed to fight any “Nigerian church” takeover of the historic landmark. He urged Anosike to invest his money back in Nigeria and warned the venue would become a drug den if used by foreign congregations. Anosike has accused McKenzie of xenophobia and political intimidation. He warned that obstructing legal property transactions by foreign residents could deter investors and entrepreneurs. He also quoted Bible verses condemning the mistreatment of immigrants.
