London-Based Iraqi Trader Shares How Yoruba Customers Taught Him the Language
A London-based Iraqi businessman and content creator known as Olakunle Oshodi says he learnt to speak Yoruba through daily interactions with Nigerian customers at Woolwich Market. He said Yoruba customers make up about 95 per cent of his clientele. Curious about the words they used, he began asking for meanings and gradually picked up the language over roughly three years. The cosmetics and hair-products seller says speaking Yoruba has helped him build trust, joke more easily with customers and form closer relationships. He was given the Yoruba name Olakunle Oshodi by a customer and hopes to visit Nigeria to experience the culture firsthand.
