Fake Lawyer Convicted in Lagos After Earning ₦7.5m From Legal Brief

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has convicted 55-year-old John Nwawuto Anoruo for posing as a lawyer and using a forged Nigerian Bar Association seal. EFCC investigations found that Anoruo, who ran a legal and educational consultancy in Ikorodu, was never called to the Nigerian Bar. Although he studied law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, he did not attend the Nigerian Law School and was not licensed to practise. The court heard that he earned about ₦7.5 million from a legal brief and used a counterfeit seal bearing another lawyer’s Supreme Court enrolment number. After pleading guilty, he was fined a total of ₦270,000. The forged seal and legal attire recovered from him were forfeited to the Federal Government.
