I was asked to make payments into staff members’ personal accounts at two government hospitals in Asaba, Delta State, within two days. At Asaba Specialist Hospital, I needed an urgent chest X-ray. Instead of being directed to the hospital’s official payment point, the X-ray operator gave me a personal account number. I paid because I needed the test urgently and could not risk a delay. The next day at FMC Asaba, a lab attendant also gave me personal account details for a test payment. A notice displayed at the facility states that patients must pay only into FMC Asaba government accounts and that paying into private accounts is illegal. These experiences raise concerns about unofficial payments in public hospitals and the pressure patients face when they need care urgently.
