Onaiyekan: Tinubu Is Detached From Nigerians’ Hardship, Aides Give Him Rosy Reports

Cardinal John Onaiyekan says President Bola Tinubu appears disconnected from the hardship facing Nigerians because aides around him may be presenting an overly positive picture of the country. The Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja spoke after the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria met with the President at the State House on July 28. He said the bishops raised concerns about economic hardship, insecurity and the political climate, but Tinubu disagreed with much of their assessment. Onaiyekan said the bishops’ position was reached after wide consultation and was not politically motivated. He also warned against one-party dominance, called for electoral reforms and questioned whether INEC can be truly independent while its leadership is appointed by the President. He added that the bishops believe their message reflects the concerns of many Nigerians and urged the government to strengthen democratic institutions and respond more seriously to the country’s difficulties.
