Lagos Must Fix Its Waste Collection Crisis Before It Becomes a Health Emergency

Heaps of uncollected refuse are becoming a familiar sight on Lagos roads, medians and street corners. Some residents are also reportedly keeping waste around their homes for long periods because collection services have become unreliable. This is more than an environmental nuisance. Accumulated refuse attracts pests, blocks drainage channels and creates conditions that can worsen flooding and disease outbreaks, especially during the rainy season. The Lagos State Government should urgently restore regular waste collection, clear existing dumps and explain the causes of the breakdown. Residents must also avoid illegal dumping, but proper disposal cannot be enforced where reliable collection systems are unavailable.
