Rufai Oseni Questions Bishop Kawas’ Claim That God Led Him to Support Tinubu
Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas has defended the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. In an Arise TV interview, Kawas said his involvement in politics predates the Tinubu administration. He cited his past support for Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, arguing that his clerical status was not questioned at the time. Kawas said he prayed before deciding to support Tinubu and believed God led him to do so. Rufai Oseni challenged the claim, asking what basis there was for invoking divine direction in support of a partisan political choice. The exchange has renewed debate over the role of religious leaders and faith-based endorsements in Nigerian politics.
