Why Do Nigerians Tear Themselves Down Instead of Uniting?

We often self-sabotage in group chats, comment sections and real life. We attack each other instead of holding the real oppressors accountable. First, political debates quickly shift to tribal and religious insults. We lose sight of infrastructure or policy while trading slurs. Second, when outsiders ban or single us out, we start blaming ourselves. We say “Nigerians misbehave abroad” instead of pushing back on unfair stereotypes. Third, we repeat negative narratives from foreign media without question. One mishap becomes proof that “that’s just how we are.” This habit of self-hatred weakens our national voice. If we want respect and real change, we must defend ourselves in conversations big and small. Call out division and refuse to confirm negative stereotypes.

Why do we so easily shift from policy debates to tribal insults instead of focusing on solutions for our shared challenges?

What patterns do you spot that shift discussions from policy substance to tribal slurs?

It's striking how conversations derail into finger-pointing at each other before any real discussion about infrastructure or governance even starts.

I understand calls for unity, but trading insults among ourselves won't fix the corruption or broken systems that hold us back.

Maybe we could start by setting clear group discussion guidelines, redirecting debates toward policy solutions and holding each other accountable respectfully.
