Justin Fashanu: Britain’s First £1m Black Footballer and Football’s Unforgiving Era
Justin Fashanu rose from Norwich City to become Britain’s first Black £1 million footballer when Nottingham Forest signed him in 1981. At just 20, he was widely seen as one of English football’s brightest young strikers. His time at Forest was difficult. His relationship with manager Brian Clough deteriorated, his form declined and he later moved through smaller clubs in England, the United States, Canada and Sweden. In 1990, Fashanu became the first male professional footballer in Britain to publicly come out as gay. He faced intense tabloid scrutiny, abuse from fans and a lack of meaningful support from football authorities. He died in 1998, aged 37, after allegations in the United States were not taken further. As a British-Nigerian footballer, his story raises hard questions about racism, homophobia and whether football has truly become safer for players to live openly today.
