Five Arraigned in Borno Over ‘Tinubu Must Go’ T-Shirts

The Borno State Police Command has arrested and arraigned five men in Maiduguri over T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go.” The case stems from an incident reported to have occurred near West End Roundabout on September 25. The defendants were charged with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, breach of public peace and thuggery under the Borno State Penal Code. They pleaded not guilty at the Chief Magistrate Court I in Maiduguri. The court adjourned the case until October 6, 2026, for a ruling on bail, while trial is scheduled to begin on October 26. Amnesty International condemned the prosecution and called for the men’s immediate release, arguing that peaceful political expression is a protected right. The arrests have also sparked online debate about free speech, policing and political dissent in Nigeria.
