Falana Criticises NBA for Inviting George Weah, Alleges Judicial Interference in Liberia
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticised the Nigerian Bar Association for inviting former Liberian President George Weah to speak at its annual conference in Port Harcourt. He urged the association not to give African leaders accused of undermining democratic institutions a platform to address Nigerian lawyers. Falana spoke after Weah's keynote address, in which the former president called on lawyers to defend judicial independence and resist political interference. Falana alleged that Weah's administration weakened Liberia's judiciary and failed to comply with rulings of the ECOWAS Court of Justice. He cited the ECOWAS Court cases involving the Mandingo people and former Liberian Supreme Court Justice Kabineh Muhammad Janneh. Falana said the court ordered remedies in both matters, including Janneh's reinstatement and compensation, but alleged that the Weah administration did not comply with the judgments.
