Abacha Family Property Dispute: Court Restrains Dealings Over Victoria Island Development
A dispute over a joint-venture development at 68 Molade Okoya Thomas Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, centres on whether the developer, Levitikal Realties & Construction Limited, was authorised only to build 18 apartments or had broader control over the land. The landowner, Dr. Maryam Sani Abacha, maintains that nine of the planned apartments were due to the developer as consideration, while the other nine belonged to her. The dispute intensified after the project was reportedly partitioned into more than 44 units, raising questions about approvals, ownership and sales to third parties. On September 29, 2026, the Federal High Court in Lagos appointed a receiver-manager to take custody of the property and restrained Levitikal and its representatives from selling, transferring, leasing or otherwise encumbering it pending the resolution of arbitration. The EFCC is also reportedly investigating allegations connected to sales of units at the site. The case highlights the risks for property buyers and the need for clear terms in real-estate joint-venture agreements. Anyone considering a purchase connected to the development may need to follow the outcome of the pending proceedings.
