Six Arrested for Hoisting Palestinian Flag on Eiffel Tower in Nakba Day Protest
French authorities arrested six activists after they draped a large Palestinian flag from the Eiffel Tower’s first floor without permission. Police say the action took place on Friday afternoon and lacked official approval. Extinction Rebellion France claimed responsibility, calling the stunt a show of solidarity with Palestinians. The group accused Israel of committing massacres in Gaza and alleged ecocide, including the uprooting of olive trees on Palestinian land. The demonstration coincided with Nakba Day, which marks the 1948 displacement of Palestinians. The Eiffel Tower has served before as a backdrop for symbols linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Last September, both Israeli and Palestinian flags were projected on the landmark ahead of France’s recognition of a Palestinian state. In October 2023, following Hamas attacks, the tower was lit in Israeli flag colours. Official figures report that attack killed 1,221 people, mostly civilians, while Israeli operations in Gaza have claimed over 72,000 lives, primarily civilians. Despite an October ceasefire, violence continues on both sides.
