Understanding Basketball Positions: Guards, Forwards and Centers
Basketball traditionally has five on-court roles: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward and center. Each position has typical responsibilities, although modern teams often use more flexible roles. The point guard directs the offence and distributes the ball. The shooting guard focuses on scoring, especially from range, while also defending perimeter players. The small forward is a versatile scorer who contributes with cuts, drives, rebounds and steals. Power forwards usually operate near the basket, helping with inside scoring and defence. Centers use their size to protect the rim, rebound and score close to the hoop. Today, many teams play positionless basketball, allowing skilled tall players to shoot, pass and dribble like guards.
