Two Inmates Die as Cholera Outbreak Hits Kano Custodial Centre
Two inmates have died following a cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano State. The Nigerian Correctional Service said laboratory tests confirmed the outbreak on September 23 after an inmate was admitted on September 17 with vomiting and diarrhoea. Emergency medical protocols were activated, with support from Kano State public health authorities. One inmate died at the custodial centre, while the other died at the state infectious diseases hospital. Authorities say the outbreak has been contained and no additional deaths have been recorded. The Controller-General of Corrections has ordered stronger disease surveillance, early detection and medical intervention at custodial centres nationwide.
