The increase comes as Congress remains divided over a spending bill needed to avoid a government shutdown by 30 September. The Treasury has also announced a larger debt-buyback programme amid investor concerns over inflation and tensions involving the US and Iran. While buybacks do not add to the debt, they underline the challenge of sustaining demand for US government bonds.
