US National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion for the First Time

US gross national debt has crossed $40 trillion for the first time, according to the Treasury Department. The figure reached about $40.047 trillion, reflecting years of rising government borrowing under both the Trump and Biden administrations. Watchdog groups warn that the growing debt could worsen inflation, limit spending on other priorities and leave the country more exposed during domestic or global emergencies. The increase comes as Congress remains divided over a spending bill needed to avoid a government shutdown by 30 September. The Treasury has also announced a larger debt-buyback programme amid investor concerns over inflation and tensions involving the US and Iran. While buybacks do not add to the debt, they underline the challenge of sustaining demand for US government bonds.
