Actress Mary Remmy Njoku has questioned the double standard in how people judge those who benefit from wealthy friends. She noted that when a successful man returns home, grown men may gather around him, call themselves his boys and receive food, clothes, bill payments and other support. Such relationships are often described as brotherhood, networking or loyalty. However, she argued that a woman who spends time with the same wealthy man is quickly labelled a gold digger. According to her, people naturally gravitate towards value, but society uses harsher terms when women benefit from proximity to wealth.
