Nigerian Textile Maker Expands Customised Ankara Sales Across West Africa
A Nigerian textile manufacturer says demand for customised Ankara fabrics is growing in neighbouring West African markets. The fabrics are used for political campaigns, traditional ceremonies, religious gatherings, anniversaries and other special occasions. The expansion could support Nigeria’s push to diversify foreign-exchange earnings beyond crude oil. It could also create work for designers, textile handlers, distributors, transporters and retailers. Recent official data showed Nigeria’s economy grew by 4.43 per cent in the second quarter of 2026, while manufacturing recorded 3.29 per cent real growth in the first quarter. The Federal Government has also renewed efforts to revive the cotton, textile and garment value chain. Manufacturers still face high energy costs, expensive finance, raw-material constraints and competition from imported fabrics. Addressing these challenges will be key to helping more locally made products compete across Africa.
