Nigeria at 66: Measuring Progress Since Independence
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on 1 October 1960. As the country marks 66 years, a comparison of selected indicators highlights areas of progress and continuing challenges. The figures cited show growth in GDP, literacy, higher education, secondary-school access, telephone connectivity and cassava production. Nigeria has also expanded its refining and natural-gas infrastructure, while several Nigerians now feature among the world’s billionaires. From only 60 active telephone lines in 1960 to more than 195 million today, the changes are significant. However, the statistics also raise an important question: how much have these gains improved everyday life for Nigerians?
