Canada Raises Proof-of-Funds Requirement for Nigerian Students From September 2026
Canada will raise the proof-of-funds requirement for international students, including Nigerians, from September 1, 2026. Applicants must show they can pay for tuition, living expenses and travel without depending on work in Canada. Students applying to study outside Quebec must show at least C$23,448 for one year of living expenses if travelling alone. This amount does not include tuition fees or transportation costs. The required amount increases with accompanying family members. A student travelling with two family members, for example, must show C$35,888 for one year of living expenses, plus tuition and travel funds. Applicants may use bank statements, scholarships, education loans, sponsor letters, salary slips, tuition or housing receipts, Canadian bank accounts and guaranteed investment certificates as evidence. Students on programmes longer than one year must also explain how they will finance the rest of their studies.
