Pat Utomi: Nigeria Is Worse Off Now Than Under Abacha
Professor Pat Utomi says Nigeria is in a worse condition today than it was under the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha. Speaking on a radio programme about the country’s political and economic situation, Utomi said the concerns raised by Catholic bishops reflect the frustration of many Nigerians. He said the bishops’ positions are typically shaped through consultations within the church, including its Justice, Development and Peace Commission. Utomi blamed Nigeria’s decline partly on the transition from military rule in 1998. He argued that principled politicians and professionals stayed away from politics, allowing former military actors and self-serving interests to dominate civilian government. He also criticised the erosion of truth, integrity and shared values in public life. According to him, Nigerians should celebrate productive work, job creation and wealth earned through enterprise rather than money obtained by any means.
