I Was Kidnapped in a Lagos Bus, but Police Allegedly Did Nothing

I travelled from Calabar to Lagos in June 2026 to visit friends, look for work and explore content creation. One rainy evening, I boarded what I believed was a regular bus from Oshodi towards the mainland after getting lost on my way back from the Island. The bus was a trap. After the driver left near an unfinished building, the other passengers stole my phone, beat me and forced another passenger and me into the building. They accessed my bank apps using Face ID, emptied my accounts and called my family while beating me, demanding ₦5 million for my release. My family managed to raise ₦500,000, which the kidnappers withdrew through my account before wiping my phone and releasing us with only ₦1,000 for transport. My friend had reported the kidnapping at a police station, but the officers allegedly did not track the phone, follow the transfers or send anyone to search for us. I later shared my experience to warn others about this method of kidnapping and robbery. The ordeal left me traumatised, but I am rebuilding my life and speaking openly about the need for men to take their mental health seriously after traumatic experiences.
