Ex-Husband of NYC Art Dealer Sentenced to Life for Brazil Murder Plot
Daniel Sikkema, 55, was convicted in a Manhattan federal court for hiring a hitman to kill his estranged husband, prominent art dealer Brent Sikkema, at his Rio de Janeiro home in January 2024. Prosecutors say Daniel used a burner phone to arrange the murder, advanced over $10,000 and bragged he stood to gain more from his spouse’s death than a divorce settlement. The alleged hitman remains jailed in Brazil. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton described the killing as senseless and cold-blooded, saying the verdict brings justice for Brent Sikkema. Daniel’s lawyer announced plans to appeal, arguing the case rests on circumstantial evidence. Brent Sikkema had built a multimillion-dollar gallery in Manhattan, representing international artists for nearly 30 years.
