India Refuses Certification for Oscar-Nominated Gaza Documentary
India’s Central Board of Film Certification has declined to approve the theatrical release of The Voice of Hind Rajab. The Oscar-nominated documentary by Kaouther Ben Hania follows the 2021 Gaza killing of five-year-old Hind Rajab as her family tried to flee conflict. Distributor Jai Viratra Entertainment screened the film but received no formal ban notice. Officials reportedly feared the film could strain diplomatic ties with Israel. Critics, including opposition MP Shashi Tharoor, called the move disgraceful and warned it undermines free expression in a democracy. The film won a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and earned an Academy Award nomination. The decision highlights the clash between artistic freedom and geopolitical concerns.
