A ₦500,000 monthly salary may sound substantial, but inflation and naira depreciation have sharply reduced what it can buy. Using the exchange rates cited, ₦150,000 was worth about $376 in 2021 at roughly ₦399 to $1. In 2026, ₦500,000 converts to about $368 at around ₦1,359 to $1. In dollar terms, someone earning ₦500,000 today is slightly worse off than someone earning ₦150,000 five years ago. The comparison also understates the pressure on households. Food, rent, transport, electricity, school fees and healthcare have all become more expensive. A higher salary does not improve living standards when the cost of living rises even faster. The key question for Nigerian workers is not whether pay is increasing, but whether it is rising faster than inflation. If it is not, people may be earning more naira while becoming poorer in real terms.
