A mother and her three daughters abducted from Ariko village in Kaduna State’s Kachia LGA have regained freedom after about 180 days in captivity. The mother was pregnant when she was taken with her daughters, aged four, six and 12. She reportedly gave birth in captivity, but the newborn died about three weeks later. The four-year-old, Christy, was said to be seriously ill during their escape and later died as the family trekked through the bush. Despite being weak and barefoot, the mother and her surviving daughters reportedly carried Christy’s body in turns until they reached a village in Kachia on Sunday. They are receiving medical care ahead of a planned transfer to Kaduna. Thirty-three other victims from Ariko and nearby Awon village are reportedly still being held by their abductors.

Calling it an escape should not distract from the urgent questions around preventing abductions in communities like Ariko.

Authorities should prioritise medical care, trauma support, and safe reintegration for the family while pursuing those responsible.
