My Friend Cared for My Baby and Helped Me Feel Like Myself Again
My pregnancy was smooth, but the weeks after childbirth were painful, exhausting and overwhelming. My mum and mother-in-law could not come to Canada for omugwo, so my husband, friends and a family friend stepped in to help us navigate those early days. I struggled to rest, even when my husband offered to handle night feeds. With time, my doctor encouraged me to trust him with the baby while I slept. That support helped me recover and return to a healthier routine. One friend made an especially lasting difference. After dropping her children at school, she would come over, care for my baby for a few hours and give me time to rest, work or simply breathe. Her kindness reminded me that new mums need more than gifts and food; they also need practical help and space to reconnect with themselves. Four months into motherhood, I have a deeper appreciation for friends who show up intentionally. I now hope to offer other mothers the same kind of support when they need it.
