Bandits Kill 21, Abduct 37 in Sokoto Community Attack; 18 Missing After Boat Capsize
Bandits attacked Tsamaye community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Monday night, killing at least 21 residents and abducting 37 others, according to residents. The attackers reportedly operated from about 9 p.m. until after 3 a.m., burning homes, stealing livestock and forcing residents to flee. As families tried to escape across a nearby river, overloaded boats capsized. Seven people were rescued, while 18 others, mostly women and children, remain missing and are feared drowned. Residents said many people had already been sleeping on farms and in bushes because of earlier attacks, but the gunmen reportedly tracked them down. They accused security agencies of failing to respond to distress calls, while a local vigilante appealed for APCs and better equipment. The Sabon Birni council chairman said casualty figures were still being verified. Police said additional personnel had been deployed as Tsamaye and several neighbouring communities were largely deserted by fleeing residents.
