NGO Demands Transparent Investigation into Death of Minister’s Physiotherapist

NGO Demands Transparent Investigation into Death of Minister’s Physiotherapist

The Nigerian Women International Alliance has called on President Tinubu to commission an independent, transparent probe into the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila at Minister David Umahi’s residence. NWIA emphasises it is not accusing anyone of wrongdoing and upholds the presumption of innocence. It argues that high public office carries a duty to submit to impartial scrutiny and that a credible investigation will bolster confidence in Nigeria’s justice system. The group warns that failing to investigate openly could erode trust in government, deter witnesses, harm investor confidence and deepen political divisions. It urges full preservation of forensic evidence, protection for witnesses and transparency in publishing the findings. Minister Umahi, for his part, says the incident was promptly reported to police. He has approved an autopsy with the family’s consent and plans to pursue legal action against those spreading false reports.

What evidence or records should the independent probe include to ensure the investigation into Mary Habila's death remains truly transparent and impartial?

Absolutely – sharing full witness statements, forensic reports and unedited CCTV clips would keep everything above board and fair.

It's interesting they emphasise no accusations, yet urgent calls for transparency can still cast a shadow over those involved.

Rush to create a new probe might overlook existing watchdog mechanisms that, if empowered, could deliver faster justice.

Local NGOs and community leaders should monitor the probe's progress and publicly share updates to keep pressure on authorities for real transparency.
