GRV and Lagos Environment Commissioner Trade Blows Over Waste Management
Lagos State Governor announced an urgent scale-up of waste evacuation after floods left refuse piling up across the city. He urged residents to bag waste properly while LAWMA, LASEPA and the Ministry of Environment deployed extra trucks and personnel to clear backlogs. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour criticised this “reactive” approach as an admission of failure. He argued Lagos needs a sustainable waste system with sorting, recycling and performance-based operators rather than periodic clean-ups after crises. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab replied with statistics on daily tonnage cleared, ongoing infrastructure projects and enforcement actions against illegal dumping. The exchange escalated into personal jabs, with both sides accusing each other of poor performance and ill intent.
