Okonjo-Iweala: Niger Delta Must Fix Infrastructure and Poverty to Become Industrial Hub
WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says the Niger Delta has the resources to become Nigeria’s next major industrial hub alongside Lagos, but its development indicators remain poor. Speaking virtually at the Niger Delta Economic and Investment Summit in Port Harcourt, she cited multidimensional poverty, declining growth and falling life expectancy. She said natural resources alone cannot deliver development without effective policies, reliable infrastructure, efficient ports and lower trade costs. The NDDC said it had provided an initial ₦5 billion facility to support businesses across the nine Niger Delta states. The organisers said more than 4,000 beneficiaries had received support, while speakers called for regional collaboration on power, rail, roads, special economic zones and investment-friendly policies.
