Wayne Rooney has criticised Luke Shaw’s defending after Manchester United lost 2-0 to Hull City in their opening match of the new season. Hull scored twice from set pieces in the first half through Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy. Rooney said Shaw’s positioning for the second goal played the opposition onside and made the goal difficult to prevent. Speaking after the match, Rooney described the error as “schoolboy defending” and said United were too passive without the ball. He added that the team lacked energy in their pressing and struggled to deal with Hull’s wing-back system. The defeat leaves Manchester United under pressure ahead of their first home match of the Premier League campaign.
