Infantino Withdraws Plan to Sell Private-Equity Stake in World Cup Unit

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has withdrawn a proposal to sell a private-equity stake in a new commercial unit that would manage FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. The plan reportedly sought to raise up to $4.2 billion by selling about 20% of the unit, valuing it at roughly $20 billion. It faced strong resistance, including boycott threats from UEFA and objections from FIFA officials. Infantino said the project was intended to generate more support for member associations, particularly in countries with limited resources. However, he said the divisions created by the proposal meant it was no longer in FIFA's best interest to proceed. He added that FIFA would continue discussions with stakeholders on other ways to grow and fund football globally.
