10 Major Lagos Problems That Remain Unresolved Under Sanwo-Olu

10 Major Lagos Problems That Remain Unresolved Under Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu can point to major projects, including the Blue and Red rail lines, bridges, road upgrades, housing schemes, hospitals and industrial infrastructure. However, many Lagos residents still measure government performance by their daily experience rather than commissioning ceremonies. This review examines 10 challenges that remain central to life in the state: gridlock, flooding, waste collection, unaffordable housing, unreliable public water, building collapses, informal settlements, street touting, poor inner roads and weak drainage. These problems predate the present administration, but they remain unresolved after more than seven years in office. The key question is whether new infrastructure has produced meaningful improvements for the average Lagosian. A city can expand rail services and construct bridges while residents still lose hours in traffic, face annual flooding, pay heavily for rent and water, and live with poor sanitation and unsafe buildings. Sanwo-Olu’s legacy will depend not only on projects delivered, but also on whether these persistent problems are substantially fixed before his tenure ends in 2027.
