How Two Iranian Women Survived 259 Days in Prison for Their Christian Faith
Marziyeh Amirizadeh and Maryam Rostampour, two Iranian women who converted from Islam to Christianity, were arrested in Tehran in 2009 after authorities raided their home and found Christian materials. They spent 259 days in Tehran’s Evin Prison, where they faced repeated interrogations, psychological pressure and threats to renounce their faith. They were accused of promoting Christianity and faced the possibility of severe punishment if convicted. The women said they continued praying with other inmates and sharing their beliefs while in detention. International advocacy later drew attention to their case, and they were released after about nine months. Their experience was later documented in the memoir, Captive in Iran.
