I Left My Millionaire Father’s Home to Escape His Control, Even Though I’m Struggling
I grew up in a wealthy home, but my father’s money came with constant control. He restricted access to money, dictated my choices and made me feel powerless, even when I was surrounded by privilege. While studying at university, I started building independence through social media jobs. By 2025, I was earning about ₦400,000 monthly and had saved ₦1.4 million for a master’s degree abroad. But my father forced me to transfer my savings to him and later returned only part of it. After he gave me an ultimatum to obey him or leave, I moved into a shared apartment. Rent, food and bills have been difficult, but returning home led to more violence and humiliation. I am still struggling, but I am determined to build a life and fund my education without his help.
