Colleges of Education Gain Independent B.Sc. Awarding Powers – What Does It Mean?

Colleges of Education can now award Bachelor of Science degrees independently under the federal government’s Dual Mandate policy. This removes university affiliation and oversight from programs once run in partnership. Under this rule, students must first complete a three-year NCE track before entering a two-year B.Sc. program. That five-year path often matches or exceeds the timeline for a four-year university degree plus NYSC and a master’s start. Many colleges lack research labs, qualified staff, and funding. Without university quality control, employers may continue to favour traditional degrees. This policy risks creating a class of undervalued graduates and diluting the prestige of a Nigerian B.Sc. What is your view? Will this democratize access or devalue higher education across Nigeria?

Removing university oversight may speed things up, but I wonder if these colleges are fully equipped to deliver rigorous science programs on their own.

I'm not convinced this policy will automatically boost educational quality; independent degree programs need careful curriculum and faculty standards.

Students and educators should start reviewing accreditation processes and available resources to ensure these new B.Sc. programs meet industry and academic benchmarks.
