In September 1996, the killing of 11-year-old Anthony Ikechukwu Okoronkwo exposed allegations of ritual murder linked to Otokoto Hotel in Owerri, Imo State. The case triggered public outrage after a hotel worker, Innocent Ekeanyanwu, was arrested while allegedly attempting to transport evidence connected to the crime. Ekeanyanwu reportedly named hotel owner Vincent Duru, popularly called Otokoto, and Leonard Unaogu as accomplices before his death in police custody. His death intensified anger in Owerri, where residents accused the police of failing to properly protect children amid reports of earlier kidnappings. The outrage led to the 1996 Otokoto riots, during which the hotel and other properties were attacked. The case went to trial years later, resulting in convictions and death sentences for key defendants.
