Oshiomhole, Akpabio Lock Horns with Abaribe Over ADC Defection in Senate
Drama erupted in the Nigerian Senate when nine senators, including Enyinnaya Abaribe, defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, lawmakers debated the constitutionality of such moves under Section 68 of the 1999 Constitution. Abaribe insists he was expelled from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2025, justifying his switch. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele argued that defection without a proven party crisis or valid expulsion could force him to vacate his seat. Akpabio has given Abaribe one week to substantiate his expulsion claim or retract his defection letter. The outcome will set a crucial precedent for future party defections in Nigeria’s legislature.
